RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
