England and Wales Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks before the final, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
